GREEN FLAG ON THE 2021 SEASON!
THE COVID HANGOVER IS REAL...
This weekend had all the promise of a new season; some new faces, familiar old ones, some fresh engines, lots of fresh rubber, and lots of eager racers raring to take a swing at the historic 2.238 mile circuit at Laguna Seca. However, hearkening back to Formula Ford races of old, we had a bit more excitement due to mishaps than battles on track.
The 29 car field lined up beautifully for the start of what was to be a 12 lap run. Danny Baker on pole in his venerable Lotus 61, followed by Martin Lauber (who was swapping his trusty old Titan with fellow JARS runner Jorge Jaramillo in an effort to help rookie Jorge shake down a new mount). Club Ford polesitter Kelly Heil lined up 3rd overall in his super sanitary Crossle 30, followed by everyone's favorite MD, Dr. Nick Colyvas on the outside of row 2. The next 2 rows found the Historic Fords of Steve Romak, Andrew Wait, Ed Lauber, and an ever improving Paul Kitchen. The green flew and the pack went to work.
The excitement however was short lived as Dave Sandin had a stuck throttle heading into T2 and was forced to take evasive action. This brought out a full course yellow that halted the action before even a lap was completed. A few laps later the grid realigned single file for a restart. As the pace car pulled off, Baker tried his best to shake Lauber, who had hitched his wagon right to the back of the little green doorstop.
Yellows breed yellows though, as they say. The full course cautions combined with very cold air temps and colder track temps made for tricky restart conditions and more than a couple of spins. And although we were hoping for a ding dong battle between the top cars, we ended up with brief runs between 3 full course yellows. The short battles between the top cars were exciting though; Baker was never able to shake Lauber, however he did lead him home with a margin of victory of a scant 4/100ths of a second. Andrew Wait in his new Titan earned a hard fought third place only 8/10ths of a second back, Ed Lauber just missed the podium in his Titan, and Paul Kitchen rounded out the Historic Ford (and overall) top five in another Lotus 61.
Club Ford leader Kelly Heil dropped out shortly after half distance with electrical problems that would plague him throughout the weekend. This left the Club Ford battle a little further back with Jim Lynn in his Crossle 35 who led Dan Wise's Crossle 25 and Mark Keller's Crossle 45 for a few laps after Heil dropped out of the race, but Lynn spun with a few laps remaining and handed the W to Dan Wise who was never out of striking distance, followed by Pacific Northwesterner Keller and Alan Dezzani's Royale. However after the checker, Keller fell afoul of the post-race weigh-in and was DQ'ed, moving Jim Lynn to 3rd.
To touch on what I brought up at the party though gentlemen, we NEED to be better about our on track awareness. There was a completely unacceptable amount of yellow flag infractions, and some car-to-car contact that must also be avoided at all costs. If this continues, the penalties will include a loss of points for the event, and potential exclusion from future events if the infraction is serious enough. I know this group can be better; I've seen it firsthand from the cockpit. Lets all take a big breath, relax a bit, and come to Sears Point next month with a good attitude and our eyes up and open!

Scoring - Club Fords and Historic Fords will be scored separately. Points for this year will be:
10 - 1st, 8 - 2nd, 6 - 3rd, 5 - 4th, 4 - 5th, 3 - 6th, 2 - 7th, 1 - 8th
An additional point will be awarded for class pole, as well as an additional point for class fastest lap. Finally, everyone gets a point for each race in which they take a green flag. So the maximum points score for a "perfect" season would be 78 points. (6 poles, 6 starts, 6 fastest laps, 6 wins). Ties will be broken by number of race wins, followed by number of pole positions, and if that still doesn't do it we will have a potato sack race at our series finale, CSRG race weekend party.
PARTY HIGHLIGHTS:
Frosty beer and chilled white wine were enjoyed by a few hearty souls that stuck around until the end of the day. The new PA (THANKS ANDREW!) made announcements and prize giving a breeze. Cris Vandagriff from HMSA contributed absolutely gorgeous trophies to the top 3 HF and CF finishers. Jay and the boys at Ivey Engines contributed two $200 gift certificates, which were awarded via name draw to Kelly Heil and Jay Streets!
Speaking of Jay Streets, he is honoring the group with the Garagiste award again for 2021. The rules are a little different this year though: all the drivers that finish each and every Crossflow Cup points race will have their name go in a hat to be drawn for a $1000 cash prize. So the pressure is on to get those finishes!
